Going for the 5K Early
I moved up the date of my first 5K. I am going to walk in one this Saturday, as well as the one scheduled October 17. I figured I was ready, so I'm going to give it a try this weekend. Wish me luck!

You don't need luck. You will do great. You are much stronger than you think you are. I have drug three different people that were in no way prepared through half marathons. People have a lot more strength than they think.
Go out and have a good time!

Re: Going for the 5K Early
Thanks for the support. Now if i can only feel better. I woke up this morning with a fair amount of head and neck pain. I have a call in to the neuro for a request for a steroid pack. Hoping it's going to break by Saturday morning.

Re: Going for the 5K Early
Well, I think it went ok. They didn't time the walkers, only the runners, so I timed myself on my spiffy new lavendar close-out watch from Target on stop-watch mode, and I did the 5K in 53:24. That's a pace of 17:17 per mile, which would almost qualify me for one of the Disney races (they demand a 16-minute minimum pace).
So, I finished. That was goal #1. I wasn't last. That was goal #2. My girls finished, and they weren't last, either. Hee-hee. We finished together, and they can walk circles around me, so I know they were fine. My younger one (who is was simply getting tired and bored with the whole thing and wanted to be done for that reason. Plus we were getting warm.
Now we have a benchmark---a place to measure improvement. I'm sure my girls could have walked faster, but I couldn't. Our next 5K is October 17. I want to improve on our time. Ultimately I want to have an average pace of 16 minutes per mile or finish in 49 minutes. That will let me know we can finish the Disney race.
I came home and took a nap. I didn't sleep well last night. I'm not sure if it was because I was afraid of oversleeping or because I started a steroid pack for my head and the steroids were keeping me up. My head, by the way, was better today. Thursday and Friday it was not so good. Either the steroid pack is already helping or I'm simply over the worst of it. But I'm grateful the big pain was gone for today. I did come home and nap, not because of my head, but because I didn't sleep well and we were up before dawn to drive out to the race, and then tired from the race.
I feel accomplished and healthy. I like doing these. I don't think I'll do as many as I have penciled in (we haven't paid for them yet), but just knowing I can finish is enough for me right now.
