what happened to the long religion thread?

Post  crt on Fri Sep 03, 2010 1:04 pm

I assume that it got too contentious late yesterday and Ronda yanked it. Is that what happened?

It is what happened Chris. I asked her to take a look, I guess she did....Sorry...
It just got hijacked into a totally different thread to the one I started....
I was concerned people were going to start falling out.

I guess Ronda thought so too....

We could always restart it, getting back on track. I was gone a few days, so I'm not sure what happened for it to get hijacked. I found it really interesting, and it also made me think a lot about my own beliefs and why, despite these horrible migraines and the fact that God hasn't healed me, I still believe in him.

It was getting personal Vicki.
The last thing I wanted.

I asked if people's faith had helped them, and if prayers were answered.
It went a long way from that, to a debate.

I wanted to support my friend who lost her faith.
The last couple of pages had strayed totally from that.
I guess Ronda couldnt pull the controversial posts so she pulled the whole thread.

If you want to restart it, that's your call. Smile

At first I found that thread interesting. Then I felt personally attacked and, being me, had to have my say. Probably caused the thread to be pulled. I am not sorry. Declare that I am not worthy the civil rights others enjoy and I will respond every time. I do not know why any discussion of faith these days ends up aomewhere, somehow in an attack agaoinst gays, but to it seems to me.

But the issue of faith and disaility, faith and illness, was interesting and thought provoking.

BUT haven't we all had our say on that subject? Do we need to re-open that discussion? I vote no, but it is you call.

Actually Bubbs I agree with both of you.

I started the thread, and the comments helped my Danish friend a lot actually.
I am not sure she has restored her faith, but she is in a better place than she was for sure.

I have no regrets and learned quite a bit about the subject and some of our fellow posters.
BUT, it went way off track, and became very personal and then, I felt critical beyond debate.

So I contacted Ronda and asked her to edit it if she could, and if she agreed it had become contentious.
She must have concurred, but I imagine editing was quite a chore, so her decision was to pull it.

I have no regrets about that either.
It had run its course and as I put the boat in the water, I took the responsibility to capsize it....

I hope it didnt upset too many people, but I felt responsible.....

I appreciate everyones comments, at least those that stuck to the initial question.....

Pen lol!

I am crushed, Pen. I can safely assume that you did not appreciate my comments! ROTFLMAO

I have no complaints with the steps you took. I am pleased that the thread did provide you and your friend with useful thoughts.

And I was VERY honest in my comments ... taking the time to think about something other than disabling migraines and to compose a post IS a huge benefit in my overall life and migraine management plan. Time I spent composing my comments was time I was able to rise above my current migraine situation - and that is always a blessing and a relief.

Richard, I guess I don`t see were you were attacked. But to be fair, you have shared a lot of your opinions about gay rights. Why can`t others share their opinions about it if they disagree. It goes both ways.

It seems to me any time there has been a post about religion or politics here on Ronda's it ends up getting personal and ugly. One of those posts is the reason I was gone for over a year at one point. I make it a point now when I see one of these posts, and it starts to go down hill, I just won't read it anymore. Migraines and life in general hold enough drama for me. I don't need to get drawn into an argument and get my feelings tramped on. I'd advise anyone else who gets upset over these types of posts to do the same. Just my opinion.

I've avoided so many of these topics in order to keep my sanity on this site. And it's not because I feel pressured not to push my big ol gay agenda" either...it's because the conflict gives me a headache...ha ha...ya know...lol

Howdy

I am in a rather good mood tonight. The episode of the past many days is letting up a little.

Milo, the difference between us is just that ... a difference in the way we relate to the world. And I love differences. It would be so boring is we all responded in the same manner all the time.

Kate, frankly I agree with part of what you said when you wrote: "Richard, I guess I don`t see were you were attacked. But to be fair, you have shared a lot of your opinions about gay rights. Why can`t others share their opinions about it if they disagree. It goes both ways._

As I wrote in my comment on the other thread - I honor honest disagreement. I said so then and I will repeat myself here. Disagree with my conclusions all you want. And viva la difference! It takes all kinds.

What I do object to is dishonest disagreement - where a person uses falsehoods to support their conclusions. Not fair. So I pointed out the falsehoods and why they were false. NOT faith. NOT conclusions and opinions reasonable may hold contrary to my conclusions ... only false statements in support of their conclusions. I am one of those rare Americans who respects the Westboro Baptist Church of Kansas - the "God Hates Gafs" faith community that has recently been inthe news for picketing the funerals of service people killed in action. These folks are pure ... they do not try to come up with rationalizations or make false statements to support their basic belief ... their pure faith. They honestly believe in their heart of hearts that their God does indeed hate fags. It is a pure and unadultered faith. I respect that.

So Kate, I agree that resect for differing opinions and conclusions is not only good manners, but what it means ot be an American at a base level.

But we do need to challenge the facts and the falsities that lead to opinions. Honest and respectable people can look at the identical facts and arrive at different conclusions. GREAT! But we do need to understand what the facts really are.

That was what I wrote about in the other thread. The facts, not the conclusions.

I just had a look at the "god hates gafs" website. Whoaa!!!! Richard please tell me you are joking?
Pure faith! More like pure hatred (shakes head in disbelieve). Just reconfirms my standpoint on religion.

Not joking. Many people believe many differernt things. The folks at Westboro Baptist have their beliefs ... and each of us has our beliefs.

I treasure freedom of speech ... even when what is said makes my blood boil. And I have a great deal of respect for people's faith. Faith without reason, faith pure and whole ... like Abraham's faith as he prepared to kill his only son Isaac ... such pure faith has my deep respect.

Do I agree with the Westboro Baptist conclusions? I do not know for sure ... maybe their god really does hate fags. Could be. Is their conclusion persuasive to me? Oh no. But still one must respect a faith so strong that it guides people of education and intelligence into outrageous acts ... such as picketing the funerals of fallen soldiers. Had I been Abraham's buddy, would I have patted him on the back and wished him a swift killing stroke upon his only son? Nope. I would not. I would have done my utmost to dissuade Abraham. But I would have respected his faith a great deal.

Honestly, this Baptist church doesn`t have any kind of faith, Just pure hate for others. This has nothing to do with Christianity whatsoever.... They contradict themselves and the Bible.

I totally value freedom of speech, but I do not agree with spewing hate and pure evil hidden under a religious cloak. Here in the UK we have laws against that. They helped to kick out a couple of rather unpleasant Muslim clerics who had a whole bunch of interesting ideas about martyrdom and the blowing up of innocent people.

I think were you and I fundamentally disagree is the fact that you view blind faith as a virtue where as I view it as slightly naïve at its best and outright dangerous at its worst.

Please feel free to practice whatever religion you please. Go romping around an ancient rock during the summer solstice, worship an imaginary friend, or even Prince Philip (yes, there is a religion that centers on her majesties’ husband), but please do not abandon your own judgment and free will.

Love

I sure hate it when I post here medicated then come back to read my own post sober and put off by what I wrote.

Richard, I'm not even sure what I meant by my post. I'm pretty sure you and I do share a whole lot in the way we view the world. I hold a lot of similar beliefs as you, at least from what I have read.

My parents gave me very little, but one thing they did give me is a core belief that every human being deserves the same respect regardless of age, ethnicity, gender, faith, financial and social situation, criminal status, greatness or infliction laden.

This core belief often allows me to find the good in everyone (ok, almost everyone), no matter how bad they may be. It is both a blessing and a curse.

(kind of funny that this post titled 'What happened to the long religious post' is getting back on the subject of religion!).
I actually enjoyed the thread...well, for the most part.

Pen, I believe you did the right thing and fully support you talking to Rhonda. It was a very interesting question, and I was actually surprised it went on for so long without getting contentious. Religion just hits so close to the core of so many...it IS personal, but was discussed for the most part in a respectful way.

Richard, you were as eloquent as always in your responses...I believe it had just run its course.

Thanks for the thread Pen. Thanks to everyones comments, too. I learned a lot...

Thanks T. As I said I wasnt trying to control anything, we are all grown ups here Razz
But I started the thread and it was long past its intention.

It is interesting that the diversity has risen from the ashes, but this time it's nothing to do with me. affraid
