referral??
how long did people stay just under their dr for their migraines before being referred to a neuro/ headache specialist?
i know some find it hard to get a dr to referr them to a neuro and i even have a friend who changed her dr as he didnt believe in migrianes!
i had them for 12 years before i asked when i suddenly started getting auras in mid 30's which is apparently when the auras usually start.

Re: referral??
I was under my GP for about 3 years and managing on Imigran, but things got worse with hormone flares and I went to CLMC.
It was another 8 years until I went to a neuro who scanned me.
Then another 5 to see another who insulted me.
Finally I got this one 2 years ago and I am probably not going to bother to go back.
I am better off with my GP. At least she is only around the corner.

Re: referral??
I find they are reluctant to refer here in the UK. I forget how many years I had migraine before I got refered, and even then, if I remember right I had to push for it.

referr
yes its hard for referrals but theyre introducing this self referral scheme now so its worth getting hold of the neuros secretary and going down that route. half the problem we now have is the gps being given their own funds and they have targets so the less referrals they do they get bonuses and any money left in the pot they pocket if theyre in the red the have to find it themselves so you can imagine what will happen!!!!

Re: referral??
First visit with my California GP = referral to neurologist. First visit with chronic migraine= referral to pain manager. that was San Francisco at turn of century.
Re: referral??
I have a PPO not an HMO so I don't need a referral to see a specialist.

Re: referral??
Hi All,
My situation was unusal, in that my headac hes became chronic suddenly. I was at boarding school and after about ten days of a migraine, my mother came up. One off the teachers had migraine, so I saw a neurologist immediately. I had a history of episodic migraine, as well as a family history of migraine and my doctor at home knew about them. I guess I have never had trouble with referrals to specialists- at least for migraines.
So, maybe one visit before I was referred, and usually not much then.
Pain free days,

Re: referral??
I also did not need a referral. I have found my GP more helpful than my neuro however.
