Remeron Empty Remeron

Post  Anna's Mom Mon Jul 05, 2010 7:08 am

Last night was Anna's third try with Remeron. She is loving this med, for how it knocks her out for sleeping. Insomnia is one of her biggest problems. But with this med--she is falling asleep almost instantly, no nightmares or bad dreams, and some really deep sleep for her. Which makes her happier and more talkative when she is awake. So far so good.

Thanks for posting. I've been sleeping so poorly lately. I know it contributes a great deal to my migraines.

Wouldn't you know it, Remeron has a huge downside for Anna.

Amazing how it knocks her out immediately after she takes it. But she said she said it is causing such depression, she really can't stand it. Yesterday she was saying some things that were totally unlike her. Terrible things. She told me last night she knows it is the Remeron doing this to her brain.

As nice as it is to sleep, I don't think she can cope with the bad stuff it is doing to her.

Oops..deleted post - I saw the follow up just now.. It did put me to sleep - the only medication which has been able to do that besides benzos -( ambien and lunesta were worthless..anything OTC is worthless as well).

I can't remember if it gave me depression as a side effect..hmmmm.. I used to write in a journal during that time - but I am sure it's long gone by now. Insomnia can be so scary though -- I start to get paranoid and depressed as all get I can't get to sleep..

Let us know how she's feeling later.. Are you continuing to use it? and what was the dosage, if you don't mind me asking..?

Cheryl,

If it is making her feel that depressed, I would take her off of it right away.

Oh, no. You both must be so disappointed. I really did not think the side effects of the anti-depressants and anti-seizures were such a big deal until Zoe took Neurontin and became suicidal. Now I am too scared to let her try any of them again.I really think the younger you are, the worse it is. I have never had anything but relief from them, but I didnt start using them until my early 30's I hate the Russian roulette we all are forced to play with our health. Please give Anna a hug for me, we know the dark place all too well.

Well, after a bad day on Tuesday she felt a tad better on Wednesday. My hubby got her out of the house for a while Wednesday night.

I told her to stop taking the Remeron, but she didn't want to quite yet. I talked about cutting it so she is only taking half, but haven't done it. Holly, she is taking 15 mg.

She wants to keep taking it because she can't stand the thought of having mega insomnia again. She has been on one med or another for insomnia during the past seven years, and nothing has worked as well as Remeron.

We are on vacation, and we are with her almost constantly.

So for now she wants to stay on Remeron.

It must be one powerful med. My RN daughter says it is a favored med to give to elderly people in the hospital for sleeping.

I would go ahead and cut it in half and see if she can still get the benifit of a nights sleep without the bad side effects. If she can't sleep, you can always give her the other half. With that option available, she might feel better about trying the lower dose.

P.S. Love that Rhubarb Crisp. My Grandmother used to make the best Rhubarb pie and when she died, the recipie went with her.

The side effects supposedly lessen in time. It is a pretty powerful medicine.. Like I said - nothing really made me sleep, besides benzos and remeron.

I agree with Hal.. if she's still using it and having bad side effects--maybe a lesser dosage might help. My psychiatrist told me to use just half a pill for the first two weeks -- so I would assume they're safe to split.. and just take half a pill until she builds up a tolerance to the drug..perhaps?

Cheryl,

I'm sorry to hear--and hope she's off and getting that crap out of her system.

Here's the big problem with atypicals like Remeron or Seroquel......they are designed for people with serious, serious bi-polar/mood disorders. If you DO NOT have a mood disorder, you are at a high chance of this medication making you feel lower than whale poop on the bottom of the sea floor.

Man, I know sometimes docs need to try stuff, but the atypicals are really nasty on people. I would get her off of it ASAP.

It can make a person that is not depressed suicidal very easily.

Good luck,
mgb

Marc has a very valid point. I was misdiagnosed as bipolar due to side effects of Topamax. I was then put on atypicals and became very suicidal. The only thing that kept me from following through was not having the energy to write notes to my family.

Hubby talks about the two years I was on atypicals and how all I did was sleep. He said he missed me.

Post  Anna's Mom Mon Jul 26, 2010 2:24 pm

The Remeron is history. She saw her doctor last week, and he promptly told her to stop taking it. Part of me knew it was a terrible med for her, but the other part of me wanted her to sleep (finally). She told him, "It makes me so depressed," and that was the end of Remeron for her. He listens.

And yes, I feel guilty for letting her take it for over two weeks.

But I have to say, the steroids she started taking on Wednesday for the ongoing burning pain in her spine, legs, and feet has been far worse than Remeron.

After puking and sobbing on Saturday with skyrocketing head pain (plus a rash on the upper part of her body), Doctor Mom said no more steroids.

I can't believe how bad steroids are for her.

Good thing she doesn't have Lupus after all because she could never tolerate steroids for it. Bad thing that she has rock bottom cortisol levels (for which steroids are a treatment). She can't tolerate steroids. Steroids are the very worst. I believe something that truly could make her very suicidal...steroids...sigh...

Remeron is a tetracyclic antidepressant and can be extremely helpful in the treatment of depression. It is widely used here in BC for the treatment of depression.

I'm sorry she had such negative side effects. If I head read this earlier I would have advised you to call her doc sooner and have him/her discontinue the med.

There is a large caution on using this medication in children under 18 for the reported occurance of increased self-harm and suicidality.

Remember, Dr. Mom is always right. You see her all of the time and know what is nrmal. If a drug is making her abnormal, discontinue it right away and then call the MD. Sometimes the cure is worse than the disease.

But make sure you always ask the doctor when they first prescribe it if it's able to be stopped instantly or if it needs to be tapered. Many meds you cannot just stop.

Oh Cheryl,
I am so sorry about the horrid reaction to meds. Every med that helped me to sleep also made me miserably depressed---which alternated with periods of screaming/yelling/irritability.

And I had dreadful reactions to the steroids the 4 times I tried them, too, each time the effects got worse and worse. It is so difficult to test meds on someone who body is saying, "Enough testing all ready. Find the right one!"

I was so sorry to hear about Susan, your step-sister. What a blow. When people say we are never given more than we can stand, or that everything happens for a reason...well, the older I get, and the longer I suffer (and the pain is not letting up as time goes on, just the opposite), the more I feel those statement are merely cliches for people who have never had a loved one suffer in great pain for many years.

I copied the lovely quote you put on Caring Bridge from Richard Cohen's book, "Strong At The Broken Places, Voices of Illness, A Chorus of Hope." Such a truthful quote, it touched my heart. Also, the name of the book is wonderful.

I am still seeing Dr. Bonesteel, he has been able to move the pain around a bit, and even make it better, but nothing that lasts longer than moments. Still, that is different than anything else the last 38 years! How can it have been this long?

Thinking of all of you and sending you much love,
M

I've been on 60 mg. of remeron for the past 6 years.
Its an antidepressant and has pulled me out of depression when nothing else has.
Remeron and Elavil are 2 of my favorite meds.
Remeron makes me SLEEP, knocks me out at night.
I dont think Remeron can cause depression after a few doses.
Give it time, it will work.
