Water stretching

Post  Paradox on Tue Dec 29, 2009 8:39 am

I just started a new program at our local Y of water stretching. I started it for my back problems but today she told me it was helpful for migraines also, so she worked on my neck muscles.

It's a very simple 15 minute session. All I have to do is relax in the water as she moves my legs, etc. The weight of my body is supported by the water.

For my head she had me lay on my back and float while she supported my head and gently moved my neck and head in various directions. It was really very relaxing.

Has anyone tried this type of therapy for M's?

I don't know if every Y offers it. The two people that do it in my small community went out to Vegas for the training.

Plus, it's relatively inexpensive. It's $19 an hour, but you only do 15 minute sessions, so it comes out to $4.75 a day. I'm doing it three times a week.

That sounds so nice, Charlotte.

With the support of the water, the stretches are probably much more gentle (always a good thing for migraineurs). Sometimes my stretches trigger/escalate a migraine, especially if there's any tension (which I always seem to have).

Do the water stretches have a more scientific name? We don't have a Y where I live, but I'd like to ask around to see if any of the PTs or massage therapists might do it.

Thanks for sharing it with us.

I'll find out Thursday what the name of it is. It was developed by a man who had been in a bad car accident and needed gentle physical therapy.
