Eye exam with huge migraine after dilating of eyes
Has anyone else had this problem when they got their eyes examed to get their glasses? My appointment went fine until she put the drops in to dilate my eyes. Not long afterwards I started feeling a migraine coming on and getting sick to my stomach.
My younger daughter did not get a headache but she normally does not get headaches. I, on the other hand, had a horrible migriane that has lasted over 24 hours. I think I have finally stopped it.
I took way too many meds to take the pain away. Now I will be running out before I can get more next month!
I think next year when I go to my yearly visit I will tell her not to put in those drops and I will just wing it that my optic nerves are fine.
Anyone else have this problem?

Hasn't happened yet, but can certainly see the potential for it happening.
Did you have to drive home as well?
Makes my tummy very upset, I think due to the change of perspective with the pupil wide open.

kimsmom,
i get a migraine all the time after visiting the opthamologist. i think it's something you have to do--never mess with eye check ups.
i'm going to my 2nd visit tomorrow morning to a retinal specialist. he uses nuclear drops--just one set and it dilates my pupils more than anything i've ever had. i have full expectation of having a major migraine tomorrow. even better, on thursday i see the dentist for 2 cavities.
get those optic nerves checked!
yeehaw.

Yes, I had to drive home. It was not too bad but both my daughter and I had semi upset stomachs. I stopped and got her a Personal Pan Pizza as per her request. She felt better after she ate. I ate at home. Less sodium which is a big trigger for me.
Good luck to you tomorrow Marc. I feel for you. I hope all goes well. I guess I will just have to grit my teeth next year and still get those optic nerves checked.
Another thing happened while at the eye doctor. You have to know that this was only the second time in my life I had to see an eye doctor for a check up for glasses etc. They used this blast of air in my eye for a test for glaucoma. They never told me about the blast of air and when it happened I screamed (not real loud) and pushed back my chair. She just looked at me and told me yes that was supposed to happen when I asked. I said well you should have told me what to expect so I would not have reacted that way. THis was a tech that did this, not the doctor.
Oh well, at least I have a whole year now before I have to go back. The eye practice as a whole was good and I like the eye doctor so all was not bad.

Re: Eye exam with huge migraine after dilating of eyes
I get a Migraine every time I have a full exam at the ophthalmologist. For me, it's not the dilating drops, it's the bright light when he holds up the extra lens and uses it to look into my eyes.
I can fully understand being tempted to ask that they not do that part of the exam, but please don't. And, please be sure they do a visual fields test. I have a rare form of glaucoma called low-tension glaucoma. During exams, the pressure in my eyes was always normal, but the visual fields test detected a tiny spot in my peripheral vision. That led to my being diagnosed with glaucoma. I've lost 50% of my vision, BUT I'm lucky they found it so early on. If they hadn't, I'd probably be fully blind now. Researchers at Ohio State University told me they think all the years I had Migraines before abortives and finding one that works for me actually caused the glaucoma. In the general population, 12% have Migraine. In the population with low-tension glaucoma, 40% have Migraine.
Please be safe?

Teri, that ratio of glucoma to migraine is really depressing.
Certainly won't be avoiding my puff test.

I think it's the cause of one of the very few auras that I got.
I normally don't get aura, but the only time that I had my pupils dilated I got one

Well next time I will have to grin and bare it. I wonder if it was the lights as well. I never thought of that.
Teri, very interesting about the field test. I am wondering why eye doctors do not normally just do that test. Glad you caught yours early. My mother has macualar degeneration and is in the final stages. She says that the worst thing is going blind. She is also mostly deaf and walks with a cane do to a small stroke. She says she has had it all but being blind is the worst.
Thank you all for the posts.
