Neurofeedback...snake oil?? Empty Neurofeedback...snake oil??

I saw a new therapist today. She spent the 20 minute session trying to sell me on "neurofeedback". Has anyone tried this?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e3iLhL3GQDk&feature=related

When she told me that she offered it, at $80 per session (no insurance taken) with an average requirement of 20 sessions to see effects, I was immediately suspicious. She proceeded to tell me it 'cures migraines'. I was looking everywhere for the hidden camera. When I told her that I was rather shocked that there was a known cure for migraines, she simply nodded.
She proceeded to tell me about the method: Supposedly it alters brain waves so that your brain learns the correct 'wave' which therefore prevents the migraine. I asked her exactly how this was done. She didn't know exactly how it works.
Come on people...if you are offering me a cure, at least explain it!

Has anyone tried this?
She also said that her friend who was an electrotherapist could also cure migraines.

I hate to be cynical, especially about something I haven't tried...but, I'm not going back.

My daughter's Neuro has it on a list to try after Botox. I have done a bit of research on it and it seems possible for it to help. Of course, I dont believe it would cure migraine. We are hoping to try Botox first, but havent ruled out Neurofeedback. Zoe cant take Triptans or most preventatives, so we have to try other things.

Actually, I have been doing Neurofeedback for a couple of years and it has helped. It is certainly no panacea, but I consider it one of my myriad of treatments.

I have sessions with a LICSW who started out as my therapist, it just so happened that she was a practictioner in Neurofeedback. She saw how much pain I was in and how the migraines were making my life so miserable and wanted to help, and suggested I try it. It is covered by my mental health insurance so I only pay $20 per session.

I have seen the difference in the EEG (brain waves) from when I started. I have learned how to calm my "unstable" brain (for lack of a better term!) somewhat through the neurofeedback. It allows me to learn how to relax my body and my thoughts to actually see a change in my brain waves on the EEG.

I find that between a daily dose of 50mg of Topamax, weekly acupuncture (esp for the hormonal migraines), and the neurofeedback, I am doing alot better. The migraines are more under control.

That said, everyone is different and may not have the same outcome; but if you can afford it, you may find that the neurofeedback will help you tremendously. An open mind will help too.
I love you Jane

Thanks for your input.
Jane, I am so glad that neurofeedback works for you!
I apologize for sounding really negative and cynical in my initial post. I think that the tone the therapist had with me upset me more than anything. She was definitely pushing the 'migraine cure' card, along with judgment, and it turned me off.
If I could try it for $20 per session I wouldn't hesitate!!!

T,

Anyone that claims cure is fishy. I'd ask what her statistics are on never having another migraine again and if you could speak to her other customers. My bet is it's around 5% and that the majority of her customers are not satisfied.

I have someone who keeps trying to push NUCCA (it's a form of chiropractor) saying it cured her daily migraines. We were doing something social a few weeks ago and having bike races (yes there was alcohol involved) and her husband told her to be careful and he didn't want to hear about a HA. Hmm, maybe she's not as cured as she'd like to think. For her it may have stopped the daily pattern but it didn't prevent another one from happening. If I'm going to shell out major money for a treatment it better darn well prevent any from coming back if you're going to claim cure.
