Thyroid and adrenals Empty Thyroid and adrenals

Post  pen Tue Jun 22, 2010 5:00 am

Has anyone been diagnosed with thyroid and also had adrenal problems please?
Were they a cause of any of your head problems?
What kind of treatment were you given for either?

My daughter is being checked for thyroid.
She hasnt had too many headaches yet, but is getting more.

Thank you.

Thyroid and adrenals Empty Hi Pen

I think you will be interested in my situation. Approx. 11 years ago I began taking thyroid medication. At exactly that time I began having chronic daily headaches. Previously I had sporadic migraine with aura. My endoconologist told me that the thyroid medication would NOT cause headaches. Fast forward....last month I saw a pain specialist. When I told him that the daily headaches began simultaneously with the thyroid medication he said he is going to do some research on headaches and medication(thyroid) and see what he comes up with. I see him next week. I'll see what he has come up with then. Hope this helps.

Very interesting Gail and sorry to hear.
I had a week staying with one of our top thyroid doctors here at his house.
One thing I learned was that many people got rid of their headaches and migraines once their thyroid was sorted.
BUT he did not use the usual meds. I know he treated t£ and T4 and I know he used armour not thyroxine.
But apart from that I cant recall.

IF you have had a bad head since treatment, then it sounds as if you need to be on natural thyroid....are you?

We are on the same page here. I have already planned to inquire about being switch to Armour. Yes, what you say is true. If thyroid is causing headaches then going on medication should sort it out. It seemed to be the opposite with me. Or perhaps it is not even connected. I guess trial and error will tell. Thanks for the input on this.

I have to use a very high dose of kelp extract to keep my thyroid stable. If you have hypothyroidism it can cause headaches and many other problems. Mine was not low enough for the doc to want to medicate. After all their job is to treat the lab report and not the patient. Right?

So I had to do a lot of reading to find out how to optimize mine. And since there is a link to chronic headache and low thyroid I wanted to rule that out as the cause of mine.

If you have a tough time losing weight, low energy or are always cold then you need to get it checked. And if it's borderline your doc will probably not want to treat it. Then it's up to you to manage it yourself. Ask your doc about metabolic syndrome and be ready for the "dear in the headlights" look, most of them are clueless.

I know so many hard driving successful people that succeed in anything they take on. But so many of them are over weight. I have to believe they put the same drive and determination into weight loss as anything else in their lives. But with a low thyroid it will be near impossible.

It seems to be a very under diagnosed and under treated problem in our culture.

Brent,

Can I ask what you take? My mother has had thyroid disease (had a large chunk of it removed when I was small) and has all the symptoms of having problems again. She had a blood test and it falls in the "normal" range and her doctor refuses to send her on (personally I don't think she's turned into a big enough pain in the a$$ to get his attention). But her hair has gotten noticeably thinner and she has no eyebrows. Just thinking if this would at least help her..

Thanks,

Becky

She must have had a hyper thyroid originally to have had it partially removed. I just take NOW Foods kelp extract but about 10 times the suggested dose. It's also a good source of trace minerals.

I don't entirely know what she had, just that she had a tumor the size of a softball removed along with a good part of the thyroid. This lovely disease runs in my family - I have a cousin who's my age who's in remission from thyroid cancer. Will pass it on to her to see if it helps. Thanks.

Can you get Armour? Everyone I know has been unable to get it for months now. There's some problem with the FDA. Armour was developed before the current approval process, but after some broohaha with the FDA, I've been totally unable to get it.

Thyroid and Migraine can definitely be linked. Take a look at Migraine, Headache, and Thyroid for some info.

Since knowing Dr Barry Peatfield and meeting John Lowe, I have NO DOUBT of the link between not just thyroid and migraine, but thyroid and IBS and Fibromyalgia too.

He is a brilliant doctor and what ddi our BMC do? Struck him off!!!!!!!

My thyroid was removed in 1997.
It worked well, all hormonal/anti-body levels were perfect so I have never been hypo or hyper.
I had a large goiter, i.e. the tyroid gland enlarges to the point of becoming an annoying stuff in your throat Shocked

Since I no longer have my thyroid, I must take daily tyroxine. I test hormones yearly and they're always normal.

BTW, I was a migraine sufferer before the surgery and I still am a migraine suffere 13 years after the operation Sad

Ivy, glad the op did what it should for you.
When I was answering Dr Peatfield phone for him what I heard was mainly women who had multiple symptoms which were potentially mis diagnosed, or not taken seriously.
Along with them was headaches and migraines.
It seems despite their levels being in range, when he treated them their symptoms went away, including the migraines.
This suggests a link with something and a secondary cause rather than a primary as you have.

Most of these women had problems with hormones. Myself included.

Thankyou for this link. I am taking a copy to my pain specialist next week. I already take Synthroid for hypothyroidism. This led me to believe, in my case, there is no connection. But who knows. He is already doing research on Synthroid to see what he finds. As my daily headaches began when I BEGAN Synthroid. Drives you crazy trying to figure it all out. When I read the article stating a connection between this and NEW DAILY ONSET HEADACHAES my heart jumped. Ihad already had in hand an article on that to take with me. (I now feel I am armed for the appointment)

Yes, I just kept slowly increasing until I started noticing a change. If my doc would have done the same thing with Sythroid that change would have been a bit faster.

But if I can stay the heck away from docs then all the better.

Those of us that had ancestors in the past that survived prolonged famine will inherit a slow thyroid. The people back then that survived, or at least long enough to reproduce had low thyroid and with food reduction would go into metabolic syndrome. That made them very efficient at storing fat. Great for surviving famine conditions but not so great for us now.

People with type O blood will have the oldest ancestors and genetics. And they will also have the highest probability of having a low thyroid. It allowed them to survive between sporadic eating. The ones that didn't have the ability to go into metabolic syndrome had much less chance of staying alive.

My last TSH result was 1.63

0.34 to 2.50 is the range.

Could Kelp be a benefit? Just to feel better in general/help lose weight...I don't have HA's at all.

Thanks!

It is the cheapest of supplements which helps. For the cost of one $20 copay to a doc you can buy two years worth of kelp pills.

I may even try one of the food/medical grade pure iodine supplements that are available. But I have spent many hours reading up on hypo thyroid and I feel safe doing my own treatment. I hope that anyone else is very careful and does their homework first. You should also have a doc that is willing to order the tests even though they are not treating you for the condition.

You can overdue iodine and create new problems for yourself. I am just relaying what I do for myself, I have a very deep and well founded distrust of doctors. And I also feel at this point I have given them enough of my money.
