Hi,

Well last week was heaven no head pain of any nature for over a week, others who suffer daily from head pain and migraine know what it is like, pure bliss. I have been getting daily migraines for months now and it was such are relief, but yesterday I woke knowing that within hour I would be getting a whopper, and sure enough by lunch time it struck big time, so I spent the next 6-7 hour in bed with an ice pack, no meds. Today it still lingers but is manageable.

If you are like me when you get pain free times you try to cram as much as you can into every day, I stayed up late visited as many people as I could and basically enjoyed myself, also I work from home so was able to catch up on work as well.

Many places in the UK have good medical service, good doctors with one and up to date ideas, unfortunately Lincoln in the East Midlands where we live is not one of them, it is a city that has changed little in the last 20-50 years. Often I read how others on this fab forum have got teams of doctors and pain management specialists together to fight and control this dreadful disease, and it sound great, but in reality where I live this would just not happen. We have the choose of one GP in our area, and me having an MRI scan the other week was almost unheard, MRI scans are still considered as a very new high tech device here, and I was privileged to have one.

Anyway I am not here to rant rather to look at what I can do and what is possible with very little money and no insurance for private care.

I talked to a bedding supplier who has agreed to supply three different types of pillows for me to try on 14 day approval I have agreed to keep and return the rest, this way I get to try before I buy, I know it may sound mean but these pillows can be expensive and why waste money.

Petadolex; I have read a lot about this and as an abortive it sounds like a possible idea, so I ordered some on Monday, it arrived yesterday USA-UK, not bad. I only got the 50mg maybe if it works I should have got the 75mg. Like others here I have a dodgy stomach and eat very little, so I am just hoping it is kind on my stomach. I will start taking it after this head pain is over, that was I maybe able to see if it helps.

I have been diagnosed with CFS, and awarded disabled living allowance, this is not a lot of money but will go some way to pay for Petadolex.

I will still take codeine if the pain is too much, it is very cheap and an ONC drug in the UK, and as long as I don't take it too often it has no side effects.

Magnesium was something I wanted to try, but as I also have IBS it is not an option as it makes the IBS far worse, but I am trying to add as much magnesium rich foods into my diet, I love spinach so I am having a load of that each day, you never know it may help.

Exercising is important, so I am aiming to walk for 45 mins every day in the fresh air, living in a city the air is anything but fresh, but 5 mins and we are out in the country side.

Last week we purchased a second hand caravan on eBay, it was very cheap and we will have to make it good but with a bit of TLC it should be great for cheap holidays away from it all, and I was thinking with a van attached to the car if I got a M on a trip I would have somewhere to lye down in darkness.

So we may not have much of a medical system but there are some things I can try.

Peter, I have trouble with magnesium, too My Dr. recommended MagTab SR (brand name). It does not bother my stomach at all. You do have to order it online, but it is worth it for me. I am going to try a new type as soon as it arrives. A friend of my sister swears it really helps her migraines. I will let you know if it helps. As far as Petodolex, I am fairly sure it is used as a preventative, not as an abortive. I tried it years ago and it did upset my stomach, so I was unable to give it a fair trial. I hope it helps you, though.
Hugs,
Cindy

Hello Peter

I enjoyed reading about your lifestyle with migraines. Do you write for a living?

I was in a massage therapy place the other day and the woman was asking me questions about how I manage my migraines and I realized how much of my life I have altered in order to cope. The spontaneous stretching and yoga and breathing, the walks, the suppliments, the gardening, the ice packs, and generally the slower lifestyle like you described.

Low cost Alternative treatment Empty magnesium

Wow - sounds like you are trying to do everything right. All I can think of to add is to check for triggers, which you probably already did.

Magnesium - here in the USA you can buy over-the-counter antacids that are a combination of calcium carbonate and magnesium hydroxide. Some use aluminum hydroxide instead of calcium. The combo makes them pretty neutral on your digestion ( the calcium or aluminum counter-acts the laxative effect of the magnesium). Generics are very inexpensive. Certain formulations of Tums, Maalox, Mylanta and Rolaids have this combo. You have to read the ingredients to see which. I know "Fast Acting Mylanta" matches this. You have to be careful not to take more than the recommended dose as you can get magnesium poisoning.

The last brand of Petodolex I had actually had instructions on the box for using it as an abortive as well. The current brand I use doesn't. I take it as a preventative, so I can't verify if it works as an abortive or not. I just know I am having success using it (along with Q10, and a supplement called Migrelief that combines B2, Feverfew, and Magnesium) as a preventative.

As far as Magnesium, I have stomach issues as well, but I use a brand called Calm and have no issues with my stomach.

I swear by exercise and diet. I work out and do Yoga. I know it's not an option for everyone though. It wasn't for me at one point in my life, but I gradually built myself up over time, and now I can work out like crazy. And can do Yoga poses that are ridiculous for a male to be able to do lol. Exercise are a huge part of my life now. None of my lifestyle changes eliminated migraines completely, but I don't have entire months where I am laid up with headaches anymore which is a huge change.
