I've been looking for migraine friendly multivitamins. I've come across two on the net. Does anyone have experience with headachefree vitamins or can you recommend a good natural multivitamin without all of the additives? I'm not looking to take several different suppliments as i'm already taking 5 pills a day for my migraine and it's getting hard to swallow!

Thanks,
Debbie

Hi Debbie.

There are so many brands out there. Generally I look for the ingredients. Something that has a decent dose of magnesium is what I look for first. Calcium because I heard the two work together when combined. Other things like butterbur is a bonus, feverfew (but not if your thyroid is hyperactive) Coenzyme Q10 is a plus and even glucosomine if you can find it in the ingredients. The above are the big ones in my mind.

Because I dont understand the other ingredients and I like to control my dosages, I buy them seperate and dose them out myself. I take 2 magnesium/calcium a day, and one Q10, and if I'm feeling achy I will take glucosomine.

Good luck!

i just tried to go to www.headachefree.com and got nowhere. i was curious.

in contrast to you, in am NOT new to this; in fact, have been at it for 41 years now.

i've tried truckloads of vitamins, both combos and singletons, and some were "guaranteed" to be THE ANSWER to migraines. which is, of course, pure bunk.

this is not a vitamin-deficiency disease. to be sure, some vitamins and minerals do help some people. i find, however, that i am highly allergic/sensitive to most of them.

the few things i do take have to be "pure and holy" and have very few ingredients, particularly they cannot have amino acids, which are the proteins. if a person is going to be allergic to something, it is to the protein component of that thing.......

i'm sure others will be helpful to you. i'm just an old person who has "been there/done that" and kind of cynical that some magic pill is going to help me. oh, if i only had the multiple thousands of $ i've spent on worthless "cures".........i could live better now.

instead, i will have to work until the day i drop dead. but that's really ok; it gets me out of bed and not feeling so sorry for myself. dianne

I tend not to bother with vitamins that are said to help migraines as part of a migraine vitamin regimin anymore, but find that having a general pack of vitamins that yes has manesium and calcium in them with other vitamins all mixed together just from the supermarket helps a little in my general health and in turn reduces the effects of the migraines and how many colds ect that I get which helps.

There are a lot of special combos out there, some of which are probably really helpful, but I got a bit suspicious of the expensive packs in the chemist labelled for migraines when you read them and they often have very little difference of ingredients than the ordinary vitamin packs.

hope this is of some use

best wishes

Di

The quote above is pretty much my experience as well. I'll take a daily vitamin sometimes when I'm particularly stressed, but there is something in them that tends to trigger a migraine more with me, rather then help. Some of the omega-3 supplements seem to help more then the rest I've tried.

I'm starting to think too much vitamin D might be a trigger for me too. Whether it's a multivitamin of 100%dv or more, drinking vit-d fortified milk/juice, or being out in the sun too long, I have been getting migraines reliably with any combination of the above for the past couple years. It's a difficult vitamin to avoid, but time after time I look back on what could've caused it and found too many sources of vitamin D throughout the day.

Thanks everyone!

The reason I was looking at these particular vitamins was because they do not have all of the additives and because of the ingredients they do have along with being a good multi-vitamin. I was told that I may benefit from a good multivitamin - i'm having a hard time finding something that doesn't have potential triggers in it.

sorry - the link was actually headachefreevitamins.com

thanks for the link. i realized after i posted to your question above, that you already knew vitamins made you worse! because of the crap/additives in them.

"americans have the most expensive urine in the world". this is a quote i heard from a respected, famous doctor more than 40 years ago, and continue to read everywhere, including the latest reader's digest article about vitamin scams.

since processed food is grown god-knows-where-and-how, it might be prudent to try and find a multiple. since i know i can't take any of them, though, i eat a varied and mostly organic diet, and am hoping all vitamin/mineral needs are covered.

please do let us know if this brand does work for you! dianne

Debbie, you might want to check out the vitamins at Whole Foods. They have a decent selection of additive-free things, and you can even buy cellulose gel caps instead of gelatin vitamins there (gelatin contains MSG, which is a migraine trigger). It's the only convenient place I've found.
