Using triptans whilst taking propranolol.

Hi i thought i read on here once that taking triptans whilst taking the beta blocker propranolol lessens the effectiveness of the beta blocker, could anyone clarify this or was i dreaming?

Not heard of that Theresa, and I certainly took both, but are the BB for prophylaxis or Blood pressure....nine were for the former.

propanolol helps to relax the vascular system thus encouraging blood flow. triptans or ergos cause constriction.

I took Inderal to decrease the pressure aspect of the migs and Maxalt still worked. Inderal is a beta blocker which regulates epinephrine and makes the ventricular contraction less powerful. Some other high BP meds have a vasodilator mechanism. Magnesium is also a smooth muscle relaxer.

I was put on Inderal because there was some concern that the Imitrex might be raising my blood pressure. Historically, I've always had great blood pressure -- and my blood pressure was great while I was on the Inderal. (Didn't work to prevent or decrease migraines, though.)

It seems to have worked out fine for me, though recently there's been some concern that my blood pressure is actually too low on occasion (though that's still speculation at this point), so I've been taken off it.

That reminds me, I need to buy a blood pressure monitor.
