Sluggish Liver anyone?? Empty Sluggish Liver anyone??

Post  theresae Thu Apr 08, 2010 1:46 pm

Hi i have just returned from my bi-monthly visit to the cranial oestopath i go to, he is a lovely chap who is french and has trained as a doctor but has chosen to practice oestopathy, he has said several times to me that i have symptoms of having a sluggish liver, i plucked up the courage to ask what that might mean, he explained that hormones are broken down in the liver and if your liver is sluggish, ie, not working as efficiently as it should, that the hormones can build up there and get redistributed into the blood stream, knocking your hormone levels out of sync, and thus in some cases excabating hormonly driven migraines,

i forget what symptoms i had that led him to believe i have a sluggish liver,( i can only understand and retain so much from him, with the accent and medical terms my brain tends to malfuntion half way through),

he has suggested a trip the health food store for some infusions, to make a herbal tea with that are recommended for the liver,he mentioned aniseed, dandelion, and something else but i cant remember what, sorry,

anyway i thought this was interesting and worth giving some thought to.

Hi Theresa,
I went through this about 10years ago. Seeing an osteopath, who persuaded me to see their herbalist....guess what...sluggish liver.....had Dandelion and other stuff....
Result....none.....tasted horrible but no change at all.
However it is something they often talk about, and there may be other ways to improve the bilirubin count.
For me I just don't think the herbs work, and to do it suppose one could with drugs...
Well its the drugs that mess with the liver in the first place.....
Bit of a dilemma isnt it...Maybe he knows of another way to do it....I do think it can be a factor...

Wow, that's weird. I found out last week that my liver enzymes are seriously elevated. My doc has no idea why. I have to go in for another blood test next week to test them again. If they are still high, he is referring me on...I'll have to ask him about estrogen being built up in the liver and causing the migraines. I was migraine free for one year after full hysterectomy, then they started coming back. Maybe they are caused from my liver...Oh I hope it is.

What did you doc say again to take? I would really like to know, so I can try it. It would be worth a shot.

Thanks, Dawn

hi there he didnt really advocate any particular brand just said pop to a health food store and speak to staff who could recommend something to cleanse the liver, i have heard of this b4 but never thought it may appy to me, milk thistle is something i have read about b4 for cleansing the liver,

i am not sure if it is because of the preventatives i take that has altered my liver, not sure really, but i will go and ask at health food store this weekend, may as well got nothing to loose other than a couple of pounds in money,

hi estre004. what a shame it didnt work, i dont think the oestopath i see is hoping to make any money out of me as his paractice is about 30 miles from the town i live in and i will go to which ever store i fancy (we have 2 in my town), but you know how it is with us migrainers, got to try it, if only to be able to tick it off the list of tried and tested cures!!

I hear ya Theresae. I'll try anything too.

About preventatives: I quit taking them for that reason. They weren't helping that much and I figured that is a lot of extra stuff in my system. I would rather deal with the abortives as needed, which is enough as it is. I have nothing against the preventatives if they actually make a difference (to me migraines are worse than anything), but I wonder how many of them actually work enough to risk the side effects long term use may cause.

I wish you luck with the milk thistle. I've heard of that too. Like I said, none of that stuff can hurt. I would rather try that stuff than more prescriptions.

Anything with aniseed will give me and instant migraine - so I think I would rather stay with a "sluggish liver" then risk that.

It all sounds, as if his next recomended treatment might be bleeding with leeches, or something equally ancient. Sluggish liver...?

I use Milk Thistle. It's supposed to detox the liver. Especially good for those of us who consume a lot of APAP.

sluggish liver? what.........?

a doc that specializes in the liver and digestive system is a gastroenterologist...they can be an MD or DO (osteopath).

the liver is measure by several markers called liver functions...given ALT, ALP, AST, Bilirubin, Albumin, GGT and a couple others.

certain markers given by these blood tests or , mri, ct, sonogram, (or biopsy) give an idea to the liver's health.

sluggish liver may indicate that you have some liver function abnormality. this, here, would not be suggested unless labwork was obtained. i've never heard it used in the U.S by the medical community for a diagnosis.

Exactly - you need proper test to ascertain what, if anything, is wrong with your liver.
Sluggish liver is not a diagnosis it is as if you sad about migraines, that there is "something wrong with your head". It is true, but not exactly a diagniosis, is it?
I am sorry, but I could not trust such practicioner any more.

Sluggish Liver anyone?? Empty Re: Sluggish Liver anyone??

Hi,

My two pennies worth.

I have had liver problems in the past most likely from over use of pain meds, but it could also be for other reasons.

Your symptoms may suggest to the doctor that your liver is not functioning as well as it should, but as others have rightly pointed out the only way to confirm this is with conventional medicine/tests.

My liver problems where picked up from a yearly health blood panel, my LFT was elevated. The test was repeated a month later and as it was still borderline high further test where done. As you know there are many causes of elevated LFT and many treatable, things like hep and celiac disease.

I was sent to a Hepatologist. liver specialist who ran bloods, US and CT scans, the diagnosis was fatty liver, or NASH. NASH can cause headaches due to the inflammation of the liver toxins are not filtered from the blood this can cause bad head pain etc

The Hepatologist suggested I take a medication holiday and see if that helped, sure enough after only two months my AST dropped from over 100 to under 50, and has remained normal ever since, I am tested every 6 months, last time was this morning, Shocked

There are some natural meds that can help, but a firm diagnosis is important first.

I have used Milk thistle, and a lot of people seem to report benefits from using it, but one word of warning do not take it prior to a blood test, it can give a false result, often elevated.

The advice from my Hepatologist for a healthy liver is simple, no or low alcohol intake, low fat diet, and as much exercise as you can tolerate, oh yes and keep your weight down,
