Med causes kidneys to shut down
My dhs bosses wife called him at work today saying that this gal she knows had kidney failure do to a med that she was taking for m. I guess the med caused her kidneys to shut down and now she is on dialisis. I guess that was one of the side affects from this drug. She didn`t know that. My dh said that he will try and find out what it was. Any ideas of what drug it could have been? That`s really scary...

no idea.... but maybe he wasn't taking it as prescribed. Some people have the "if one pill works, 2 will work better" theory.

Possibly, but many drugs can cause side effects and many of these are serious and life threatening. My sister almost died using depakote as prescribed. She went into liver failure and it was only due to the observation of a very good nurse who then brought it to the attention of the prescribing physician, that she was taken off the drug and survived. (She is autistic and was given the medication by her care providers as prescribed, all of it well documented.)
Additionally, no studies have been conducted that show the effects of the interactions of more than a couple of drugs, yet how many of us here are taking several? It simply is not possible to predict what will happen, either now or after a time (effects can be cumulative.)
Hard as it is to believe, people die from taking medications properly prescribed. Iatrogenic illness or death is a reality for more than we would like to believe.
Many migraine drugs are extremely powerful and every drug, no matter how benign it may seem, has side effects. Maybe a better way to look at medication is to realize that they all have effects. The ones we want are called therapeutic. The ones we don't are called side effects. But the body doesn't make that distinction. It simply reacts to the drug. That can be life saving, or it can be life threatening.

I could have been one of these people and it would have been due to neglect.
I was asked to take Methysergide.
I didnt fancy it because of the side effects and the fact that it is only usually prescribed in hospital.
I checked it out on line and found that it is contra indicated for people with kidney problems.
I only have one working kidney. I have a congenital abnormality....the right one works a little bit, but
mainly it is all down to the left. It clearly says, "not to be used with decreased kidney function".
I am so glad i checked it out. Shouldn't he have asked me before prescribing?
This is a dodgy drug anyway...a last resort.
I just had a gut feeling, and so glad I did.
So there are many drugs out there than can hurt us, and preventives for migraine are among them.
Just cant trust the dr, not even the neuro to do all the homework for you I guess.
We have to be our own drs too , as we all on here know...

Re: Med causes kidneys to shut down
My mom is telling me this all the time ...
"All these meds are bad for your kidney, just take it on, bear with it ... "
The problems is :
a) Pain (especially extreme one) is medically proven (afaik) to be quite bad for the brain (in the long run)
b) Between feeling extremely miserable 30% of the time without any possible scheduling of my life (and posibly living 5-10 yrs more) and having more or less normal life taking meds (but probably a bit shorter one) I definitely choose second.
If there is no soul and death is permanent - I don`t want to spend my ONLY life unnecessarily suffering when I can decrease it considerably.
If there is a soul and rebirth - all the more reasons to just live the life as fully as you can and just get on with the next one when this comes to end.

I sooooooo didn't know what dh was either and didn't want to ask.
My brother died at age 26 on a combination of medications, all within "normal therapeutic" range.
The autopsy could not determine a cause of death.
This has always granted me a very healthy respect and fear for the medications we all are taking.

Pen - I agree. WE have to look out for ourselves when it comes to the medication we take. Don't rely on your doctor.
Zekses - I agree with you also that if a medication is making your life quality better but "may" shorten it, I would go with the better life quality. And, I also agree with you 100% that the pain we suffer in the brain cannot be at all healthy and any medication you can take to abort it has to be healthier!
I think we should take stock of the drugs we are taking and eliminate any that "possibly" may be helping. I bet everyone of us on this forum are taking at least one unnecessary drug.
